Mazzen Shalaby
College ‘20, Batten ‘21 | Fredericksburg, VA
Mazzen is a graduate of Harvard Law School. He served as the student member of the Board of Visitors from 2020 to 2021. At UVA, he was president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) from 2019 to 2020. He is a Jefferson Scholar and lived on the Lawn.
Zaakir Tameez
College ‘19 | Houston, TX
Zaakir is a graduate of Yale Law School. He worked in President Jim Ryan’s office from 2019 to 2020. At UVA, he was the founder and first executive director of the Muslim Institute for Leadership & Empowerment (MILE). He is a Fulbright Scholar and lived on the Lawn.
Omar Elhaj
College ‘21 | Burke, VA
Omar is a graduate of the Princeton School of Public & International Affairs. At UVA, he was President of the Class of 2020 for all four years. He was also the recruitment director of Muslim Institute for Leadership & Empowerment (MILE) from 2018 to 2019.
Sara Zahir
College ‘19, McIntire ‘20 | McLean, VA
Sara is the Innovation & Business Development Manager at a startup in New York. She sits on the Young Alumni Council, advising the Board of Managers at the UVA Alumni Association. At UVA, she led the Virginia Interfaith Coalition from 2017 to 2019. She lived on the Range.
Al Ahmed
Education ‘19, Education ‘20 | Alexandria, VA
Al is currently pursuing a career in medicine. At UVA, he served as the president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and was the director of operations for the Muslim Institute for Leadership & Empowerment (MILE) from 2018 to 2019. He played a key role in helping to lead the campaign to establish the UVA Interfaith Student Center. He is passionate about the Islamic sciences and is currently a student of knowledge at Tanwir Institute and Miftaah Institute.

College ‘25 | Cleveland, OH
Sarah is a fourth-year student at UVA and was a member of the UVA Task Force on Religious Diversity & Belonging. She served as the Outreach Chair of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) from 2023 to 2024. She is a Jefferson Scholar.

Muaaz is a Senior Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company. At UVA, he was the president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) from 2022 to 2023. He lived on the Lawn.

College ’24 | Charlottesville, VA
Kaukab is a Software Development Engineer at Amazon. He worked in President Jim Ryan’s office from 2024 to 2025. At UVA, he was the president of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Habitat for Humanity at UVA (HUVA) from 2023 to 2024. He lived on the Lawn.

MLP Development Interns
In the summer of 2025, we hosted our first Muslim Life Internship Program, bringing together current students and recent graduates to work on key development initiatives. Interns collaborated with teams focused on parent engagement, alumni engagement, and documenting the history of Muslim Life at UVA.
We hope to bring this program back in summer 2026 as a way to continue investing in student leadership, storytelling, and community-building. Students, keep an eye out for applications!
Asma Poshni
College ‘25 | Potomac, MD
Asma graduated from the University of Virginia with a History major, concentrating in Race, Ethnicity, and Empire. While at UVA, she served on the executive boards of the Pakistani Students’ Association and of UVA’s philanthropic acapella group, the AcHOOstics.
Aseel Osman
College ‘26 | Falls Church/Woodbridge, VA
Aseel is a rising fourth year student at UVA and the social chair for the Arabic Student Organization. She was part of the 2024 MILE cohort and is members of the MSA and Black Muslims Student Organization.

I graduated with a B.A. in English with a concentration in Poetry Writing and a minor in Religious Studies. I enjoyed serving as sister’s coordinator for MSA Council in my 3rd year, as well as being an active member of Arab Student Organization and Sudanese Student Organization. I also worked for Cavalier Daily for 2 years and lived in the IRC my whole time at UVA!
